The people that choose dogs for their best friends and companions know what a shock collar is. Many of them have used one with their dogs or have been considering purchasing one. If used correctly they can be so effective for training purposes and can be very handy. But here comes the question are they waterproof, and are they safe to be used around water?

Let’s start by explaining what a shock collar is and try to answer the questions.

What Is a Dog Shock Collar?

Shock collars are a type of aversion therapy originally used in the 1960s to train hunting dogs. These days, shock collars are often used to curb a variety of stubborn and unwanted behaviours in family dogs, from excessive barking to food aggression, as well as to train puppies to stay in shape. Safe within a property boundary or adhere within walking distance while off-leash.

Shock collars are not intended to be a punishment, but rather as a deterrent to train a dog for negative or dangerous behaviour. The theory is that your dog will associate the unwanted behaviour with an uncomfortable shock and stop doing so until they no longer require that reminder.

The shock delivered by an approved shock collar is safe, so while it’s certainly enough to get your dog’s attention and deter certain behaviours, it’s not going to do any lasting physical harm. With most shock collars, there are multiple levels of enforcement so you can set the level of reprimanding unwanted behaviour accordingly. For example, many shock collars will administer an acoustic signal and/or a vibration as a warning before an actual shock is delivered to your dog. This also allows you to give a verbal command (“No!” Or “Down!”)

The Difference Between Waterproof and Water Resistant Shock Collars

There are few types of shock collars: waterproof, water-resistant and non-waterproof.

As well you need to know what is a recommended space between a dog collar when you are placing it on your pet.

The waterproof training collars are those that allow outside to get wet on rainy days, splashing some water, play in puddles, or slightly wet with a hose.

Unlike water-resistant collars, as the definition says, they cannot be submerged, the prices of waterproof collars are usually higher.

A waterproof collar is designed to only be able to get wet, its protective layer and level of water tightness are lower than a water-resistant collar.

When buying a collar we must bear in mind the environment in which it will be used and the characteristics and personality of our dog, if our dog is prone to getting into water we must choose to buy a watertight collar.

Many times we get confused with the terms and even the sellers of necklaces do not specify it clearly, this can lead to confusion and problems with the manufacturer’s warranties.

We have found many sales advertisements on internet pages where they indicate that the necklaces are waterproof and only waterproof, in the product characteristics or description we must find the word waterproof or water-resistant.

How Do Shock Collars Work?

The function of the electric dog collar is to be able to correct the dog when it does something wrong, when its behaviour is not appropriate, such as when it tries to attack another dog, when it tries to eat faeces or when it escapes and does not obey the order to call.

This type of electric collar is not used to correct barking dogs since for this there is a different type of collar that detects the barking of the dog and acts accordingly.
